How has job hunting evolved?

From Classifieds to Cloud: How Job Hunting Evolved for Accountants and HR

When I began my recruitment career in early 2000 the landscape of job hunting was a completely different and over the past two decades it has undergone a dramatic transformation. This shift is particularly evident for fields like accounting and Human Resources (HR), which have seen both their skillsets and the methods of finding talent evolve significantly. Let’s delve into how accountants and HR professionals navigate the job market today compared to 20 years ago.

The Classifieds to Online Odyssey:

In the pre-internet era, job hunting for accountants and HR specialists revolved around physical classifieds in newspapers and industry publications (Thursday seemed to be the day where the local paper ran a extended jobs section). These ads, often dense with text, provided limited information. Resumes were mailed or faxed, which was a slow and impersonal process. Networking often meant attending industry events and conferences, hoping to catch a recruiter’s eye, whilst recruiters were busy scurrying around trying to gain the attention of potential customers.

Today, online job boards like Indeed and LinkedIn reign supreme. These platforms offer a wider range of opportunities, with detailed job descriptions and filtering options to target specific roles. Resumes can be uploaded and customised for each application, increasing efficiency. Social media platforms like LinkedIn have become powerful networking tools, allowing professionals to connect with recruiters and hiring managers directly.

Tech Savvy is Key:

The rise of accounting software like QuickBooks and Xero, along with HR information systems (HRIS), has made technical skills a necessity for both professions. Accountants today need proficiency in cloud-based accounting tools and data analytics. HR professionals require expertise in applicant tracking systems (ATS) and employee onboarding software. This shift has impacted job hunting as well. CV`s now need to highlight these technical skills alongside traditional experience and competencies.

The Power of Personal Branding:

With the abundance of online profiles, personal branding has become crucial for both accountants and HR professionals. Maintaining an updated LinkedIn profile with relevant experience, skills, and endorsements showcases your expertise to potential employers. Accountants can leverage online platforms to share industry insights and thought leadership, demonstrating their knowledge and passion for the field. HR professionals can utilize social media to illustrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, a growing priority for many companies.

The Rise of Soft Skills:

While technical skills are essential, the importance of soft skills has also grown. Accountants need strong communication and problem-solving abilities to collaborate effectively with clients and colleagues and the rise of business partnering roles means commercial decision making is a core finance function. HR professionals require exceptional interpersonal skills to manage conflict resolution, employee relations, and talent development. These skills are often assessed through behavioural interview questions and case studies and competency based interviewing common place.  Strong preparation is crucial for job seekers to be successful.

The Changing Role of Recruiters:

Recruiters have become more strategic in their approach. They often leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn to directly source candidates. For accountants, recruiters might target individuals with specific industry sectors or experience within niche skillsets. HR professionals could be sought out for their expertise in areas like employer branding or talent acquisition strategies.

Navigating the New Landscape:

So, how can accountants and HR professionals adapt to the new job hunting landscape? Here are some key tips:

  • Build a strong online presence: Create a compelling LinkedIn profile and consider building a professional website showcasing your skills and experience.
  • Become tech-savvy: Develop proficiency in relevant software and highlight your technical skills in online profiles and resumes.
  • Embrace continuous learning: Stay current with industry trends and advancements. Take advantage of online courses and certifications to enhance your skillset.
  • Network actively: Build connections with recruiters, hiring managers, and industry professionals online and offline.
  • Tailor your resume and cover letter: Don’t send generic applications. Adapt your resume and cover letter to highlight the specific requirements and qualifications mentioned in the job description.

By embracing these strategies, accountants and HR specialists can navigate the evolving job market with confidence and secure the positions that align with their career goals. The job hunt may be different today, but the fundamental principles of showcasing your skills and experience remain the same. By adapting your approach to the digital age, you can unlock exciting new opportunities in the ever-changing world of work.
