Is dealing with stress just another sign of weakness?

A close friend has been distant of late!  Not making any social engagements and generally being introverted. In all probability, they are probably just busy and the pace of the work life balance is possibly out of kilter.  There is however, a slightly more sinister possibility.  Your friend, co-worker or associate is struggling with their mental health.

When speaking to a pal recently, it became apparent that for this individual, their health deteriorated over a number of months.  It was clear that the final straw was just that, the final trigger that resulted in a shutdown, everybody, including me, had ignored the early signs. In sporting terms, I guess you could say that it is like a boxing match (not that I am a big fan), the knockout blow is the last hit, but the punches dealt beforehand have laid the foundations.

It’s funny that on the same basis, people’s perception of health and well-being are often confused.  Because somebody looks normal, because they have managed to complete a “normal” days’ work, the rational is that they have a healthy state of mind.  Instead we should possibly be looking at people in a pastoral way ensuring that we do not contribute to the stress and anxiety that a person could experience.

It is a bit of a shame that in today’s world, there is still a bit of a stigma around the ability to deal with emotions and your wellbeing, however, if we look back through the centuries different health issues have faced many stereotypes and labels.  Maybe the 21st century is the turning point for physiological awareness and understanding. People, in my opinion, should not feel ashamed, vulnerable or prejudiced because they don’t have the tools to deal with a situation.  Maybe, we should look at empowering young people to learn more about metal welfare from an earlier age.

Either way, one thing is for sure, Able Bridge Recruitment aim to reduce the pressure on clients and candidates when they are entering the employment market.
